JAKARTA - An Israeli attack hit southern Lebanon and the outskirts of Beirut's capital and killed five medics. While Hezbollah fired rockets at the Khiyam.

Israel continues its intense military operation against Iran-backed Hezbollah armed group, eliminating hopes that US envoys' efforts could lead to a ceasefire in the near future.

Hezbollah said it had fired rockets at Israeli troops in eastern Khiyam at least four times on Friday, November 22.

Lebanese security sources told Reuters Israeli forces had also advanced in a number of villages to the west.

They said Israel was most likely trying to isolate Khiyam ahead of a major attack on the city.

Israel's attack on two other villages in southern Lebanon killed a total of five medics from the Hezbollah-affiliated rescue force, the Lebanese health ministry said.

Earlier American mediator Amos Hochstein said earlier this week in Beirut the ceasefire was in our hands.

Amos continued his journey to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli Defense Minister Katz before returning to Washington, according to news outlet Axios.

His visit was aimed at ending hostilities for more than a year between Israel and Hezbollah along the southern Lebanese border, which increased dramatically as Israel stepped up its attacks at the end of September and sent ground troops to Lebanon on October 1.

Israeli forces have been battling Hezbollah in cities along the border and this week they moved further to the banks of Khiyam, a city about six km (four miles) from the border.
