Russia Ready To Provide Military Assistance If North Korea Is Attacked, Deputy Minister Of Foreign Affairs: Actions Taken According To Law

JAKARTA - Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko said Russia would provide military assistance to North Korea if the country was attacked, a move in accordance with the agreement between Moscow and Pyongyang.

"If an act of aggression is carried out against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, all necessary action will be taken in accordance with our law, in accordance with the DPRK law," he told TASS, as quoted October 16.

Furthermore, Deputy Foreign Minister, Rudienko, said that the clause regarding military assistance was listed in the agreement on a comprehensive strategic partnership between Russia and North Korea which was handed over to the State Duma for prior ratification.

"The agreement explains everything: article three, article four. The agreement is signed, so it is public," he said. "The agreement has Article 4, which appropriately discusses the issue of mutual assistance in the event of aggression, that both parties, if there is aggression against one party, will provide mutual assistance needed, including military assistance," he explained.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously submitted a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement between Russia and North Korea to the State Duma for ratification. The agreement was signed in Pyongyang on June 19, 2024.

The agreement stipulates that both sides permanently maintain and develop, taking into account national laws and their international obligations, comprehensive strategic partnership relations, based on the principles of mutual respect for state sovereignty and territorial integrity, not interfering with domestic affairs, equality, and other international legal principles related to friendly relations and cooperation between countries.

Both sides are working to build global strategic stability and a fair multipolar international system, according to the memo of the agreement.

The agreement also states that if there is a direct threat in the form of acts of armed aggression against one party, both parties must, at the request of one party, immediately activate bilateral channels for consultation with the aim of coordinating their positions and approving possible practical actions to help each other to eliminate the threat.

If one side is attacked armed by any country or several countries and thus is in a state of war, the other party will immediately provide military assistance and other assistance in any way it has in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter and in accordance with the laws of the Russian Federation and the DPRK.
