JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reminds the public to be aware of extreme weather. This is the result of the detection of two tropical cyclone seeds, namely the 90S tropical cyclone seeds in the Indian Ocean southwest of Sumatra and the 99S tropical cyclone seeds in the Savu Sea, East Nusa Tenggara.
Deputy for Meteorology at BMKG Guswanto said the intensity of the two tropical cyclone seeds tends to strengthen in the next 24 hours with a movement away from Indonesian territory.
"Although it is predicted that they will stay away from Indonesian territory, indirectly the presence of these cyclone seeds can significantly contribute to increasing the lability of the atmosphere and the growth of rain clouds in several regions in the country", Guswanto said in a written statement to reporters, Saturday, April 3.
As a result, these cyclone seeds encourage an increase in wind speed and have an impact on increasing wave height in parts of Indonesian waters.
"The potential for high waves of more than four meters is predicted to occur in the following areas of the western waters of Mentawai Islands, Bengkulu Waters, Enggano Island Waters, Lampung West Waters, West and South Sunda Strait, South Banten Waters, and the West Indian Ocean, the Mentawai Islands to South West Java", he explained.
Furthermore, he also mentioned the potential for extreme weather in the form of very heavy rain, strong winds, and high waves in the next week in parts of Indonesia.
The areas that have the potential for moderate to heavy rain in the next week include Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Bengkulu, Lampung, and South Sumatra. Then Banten, DKI Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, DI Yogyakarta and East Java.
Furthermore, North Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua. "Meanwhile, for the potential for very heavy rain, BMKG predicts this can occur in areas including South Sulawesi, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, and East Nusa Tenggara", said Guswanto.
Next, the potential for strong winds can occur in Lampung, Banten, Central Java, DI Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, and South Sulawesi.
With these conditions, BMKG then appealed to the public to remain vigilant and be careful of the potential for extreme weather such as heavy rain-very heavy which can be accompanied by lightning, strong winds, and high waves.
Appeals are also conveyed to all policymakers in the regions. "Together with the community, it is also hoped that they can prepare themselves to anticipate hydrometeorological disasters that can be caused, such as floods, landslides, flash floods, puddles, and fallen trees", he concluded.
