JAKARTA - The government through the Ministry of Industry supports the implementation of pilot projects and comprehensive studies on the implementation of the use of electric vehicles in a number of regions in Indonesia, especially in tourist destination areas such as Bali.

Minister of Industry (Menperin) Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said this effort would contribute to the construction of the total value chain of electric vehicles and accelerate the industrialization of electric vehicles in the country.

"For example, what is being carried out in Bali is a strategic step to create a domestic market, build an electric vehicle ecosystem, and at the same time promote EV Ecotourism, which will support tourist attractions in Bali and Indonesia as a whole," he said in a statement Wednesday, March 31.

The Minister of Industry added that this momentum is also proof that the manufacturing and tourism sectors are running in synergy in an effort to spur national economic recovery.

"We hope the provincial government can follow up through the application of special zones for electric vehicles in the Bali region," he said.

He is optimistic that the implementation of the pilot project will play a role in supporting the government's efforts to popularize electric vehicles to the wider community and accelerate the acceleration program for the development of electric vehicles in accordance with the mandate of Presidential Decree Number 55 of 2019.

"In fact, assisting the government in achieving the target of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 29 percent with its own efforts by 2030," he said.

In addition, the Minister of Industry encourages a similar pilot project approach to be applied in five super priority tourist destination locations set by the government, namely Labuan Bajo - East Nusa Tenggara, Mandalika - West Nusa Tenggara, Lake Toba - North Sumatra, Likupang - North Sulawesi, and Borobudur - Central Java.

"This step will certainly be able to support the targets of the Making Indonesia 4.0 program, with the national motorized vehicle industry being a global player and export hub for motor vehicles, both for oil-based vehicles or electric vehicles (EV)," he said.

For information, the government is targeting the production of Battery-Based Electric Motorized Vehicles (KBLBB) in 2030 of 600,000 units for four or more wheels, and 2.45 million units for two wheels.

The KBLBB production target is expected to be able to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2.7 million tons for four wheels and more and 1.1 million tons for two wheels.
