JAKARTA - The Philippine Authority said an influential sickle accused of sex trafficking and sexual harassment had been arrested.
Apollo Quiboloy, who proclaimed himself as "owner of the universe" and "son of the appointed God", is wanted on allegations of child abuse and sexual as well as allegations related to human trafficking. He has denied wrongdoing.
"Apollo Quiboloy has been arrested," said Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr on his Facebook page quoted from Channelnewsasia, Monday, September 9.
Abalos did not specify the details of the arrests. The priest is also on the FBI's most wanted list in the United States on separate charges of sex trafficking and smuggling large amounts of cash. Quiboloy certainly denied the FBI's allegations.
More than 2.000 police have been deployed since last month to search a large complex in the southern city of Davao owned by the Church of Quiboloy, the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC), on suspicion of hiding in a bunker.
Philippine police spokesman Jean Fajardo confirmed to reporters on Sunday that Quiboloy was arrested inside the compound, but gave no further details.
Quiboloy and four other defendants were transported by military plane to the capital city on Sunday night after surrendering to the authorities, Fajardo said. The five of them were detained at the detention facility inside the Police Headquarters.
"At around 1.30 WIB (05.30 GMT), negotiations were carried out for their handover because we gave them an ultimatum 24 hours," Fajardo told reporters.
Quiboloy was followed by millions of people in the Philippines, where church leaders hold great power in politics. He is an old friend of former president Rodrigo Duterte.
