President Zelensky Supports India to Host Second Peace Summit on Ukraine Conflict

JAKARTA - Several countries have the opportunity to host a peace summit on the Ukraine conflict, with India becoming the latest candidate.

The Russia-Ukraine war has been going on for two and a half years, while peace efforts continue to be carried out by holding international meetings.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said negotiations were underway with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey and Switzerland regarding a second peace summit in a conversation with Indian journalists shared on his social media on Sunday.

President Zelensky also said he had told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi his support for India to host the second peace summit, as Kyiv hopes to find a host among countries in the Global South.

"But I want to be frank, and this applies not only to India, but also to any country that will be positive about hosting the second summit. We will not be able to hold a peace summit in a country that has not joined the peace summit communiqué," President Zelensky said, as reported by Reuters on August 26.

The Ukrainian president added that he had discussed all the points of the previous communique and peace summit during his meeting with PM Modi on Friday.

Ukraine is known to be holding international summits to end the war with Russia. The first meeting was held in June in Switzerland.

For the upcoming second round, President Zelensky and Ukrainian officials emphasized that Russia must attend the meeting, after the country was not invited to the previous meeting.

President Vladimir Putin and top Russian officials said that the country did not rule out the possibility of holding talks.

However, the latest developments with Ukraine's attack on Russia's Kursk on August 6 have been in the spotlight with a number of Moscow officials saying that negotiations are impossible to hold in the current situation.
