UN Human Rights Office Requests Access To Russian Kursk, Investigate Alleged Human Rights Violations Of Ukrainian Soldiers

JAKARTA - The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has requested access to Kursk territory in Russia to investigate alleged human rights violations by the Ukrainian armed forces.

OHCHR spokesman Ravina Shamdasani said gathering information about the situation would be difficult without such access.

The UN agency also received a letter from Russia's Human Rights Commissioner, Tatyana Moskalkova, urging the organization to condemn Ukraine's acts of terrorism in the Kursk Region, OHCHR spokesman Elizabeth Thorsell told Sputnik.

Currently, OHCHR can confirm the deaths of at least four Russian civilians in the Kursk Region as a result of the Ukrainian attack and has identified them, Shamdasani said. In addition, the UN agency is aware of several other civilians, including medical officers and a journalist, who were injured, although details of each incident are not known for sure.

On Sunday (11/8), Moskalkova said he had asked the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, to condemn the Ukrainian attack on the Kursk Region.

Last week, Ukrainian troops crossed Russia's borders and launched an attack on the Kursk Region. Russian President Vladimir Putin, commented on the attack, saying Ukraine had carried out another massive provocation and opened blind fire on civilian targets.
