RW In Tambora Holds A Competition To Arrest Thieves, Called Citizen Criticism For The DKI Provincial Government And The Police

JAKARTA - Chairman of Commission A of the DKI Jakarta DPRD, Mujiyono, assessed that the competition to catch thieves made by a RW chairman in Tambora to his citizens was a social criticism.

In a sense, people still feel that security in their residential areas is not guaranteed. Thus, they decided to arrest the perpetrators of the crime themselves.

"I think this is a form of solution from the community because it is angry with bad security conditions. For the government and the police, this is a form of social criticism from the community," Mujiyono told reporters, Tuesday, July 30.

Mujiyono also views this phenomenon as showing the weak efforts of the Government and the Police in maintaining the safety of residents, especially in areas prone to crime.

Thus, Mujiyono urged the DKI Provincial Government to try to improve security support facilities in residential areas.

"CCTV must be placed more and more in environments prone to crime, besides that environmental security must be improved by the government and the community," he said.

Mujiyono is also worried about the potential for wrongful arrests by residents of people suspected of being thieves in the area, just because they are tempted by the prize.

If the wrongful arrest occurs, this will actually entangle innocent people in punishment.

"Obviously this is very prone to negative excesses, wrongful arrests, even in order to get a prize, an innocent person can be accused of theft," he said.

Information about the thief catch competition is contained in the form of a banner spread across RW 01, Jembatan Besi Village.

In the banner, it is stated that residents who have succeeded in arresting motor vehicle thieves will receive a prize of Rp. 1 million at night and Rp. 500 thousand during the day.

For residents who managed to catch snatching or stealing charity boxes in places of worship, they received a prize of Rp. 500 thousand at night and Rp. 250 thousand during the day.

Prizes can be given if residents catch thieves by bringing evidence, victims, perpetrators, and witnesses to the RW 01 of the Iron Bridge device.

Hasanuddin, chairman of RW 01 of the Iron Bridge, initiated it. The reason is that the competition was motivated by residents' unrest by theft cases. Meanwhile, RT and RW devices are often blamed if there is an incident.

"If the motorbike is lost, RT, kamtib, hansip. Besides, RW staff are not active in all kinds of things. One month there were 4 motorcycle incidents. So we have a lot of reports to us, right. We think there," Hasanuddin told reporters.

Therefore Hasanuddin decided to make a competition with a gift that he stole from his own pocket.

"This is based on my own initiative and disbursement. The problem is in the funds. When they break down, they ask who paid, yes I said I paid. I don't have to take part. I have my program to pay. The important thing is that all RTs mobilize young people rather than hanging out is not clear," he added.
