There Is No Safe Place In Gaza, UNRWA: Hundreds Of Refugees Died Under UN Protection

JAKARTA - More than 560 refugees died in the Gaza Strip while taking refuge in UN Agency refugee camps for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA).

"Our central office in Gaza was destroyed to the point of no recognition. More than 560 refugees, including many women and children, were killed while sheltering under the UN flag," Antonia Marie De Meo, deputy commissioner general of UNRWA said at a UN Security Council meeting, Friday, July 26.

"Many of our schools were destroyed and can no longer be used as schools. In the last two weeks alone, eight UNRWA schools, all of which are refugee shelters, have been attacked," he continued, quoted by ANTARA.

De Meo said women, children, journalists and humanitarian workers all continue to pay "very expensive prices".

UnRWA is no exception. 199 of our colleagues have now been killed, mostly with their families, "he said, reiterating that there is no safe place in Gaza.

Ignoring UN Security Council resolutions demanding an immediate ceasefire, Israel faces international condemnation amid brutal attacks that have continued in Gaza since the Hamas attack on October 7.

Nearly 39,200 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children, and more than 90,400 people have been injured, according to local health authorities.

More than nine months after the Israeli attack, much of Gaza's territory fell into ruins amid food blockades, clean water, and crippling medicines.

Israel has been sued for genocide at the International Court, which ordered Tel Aviv to immediately halt military operations in the southern city of Rafah, where more than 1 million Palestinians sought refuge from war before it was invaded on May 6.
