DKPP Fires Hasyim Asy'ar, Here's The Mechanism For Substitution Of KPU Chair

JAKARTA - Former Commissioner of the General Elections Commission (KPU) Hadar Nafis Gumay revealed that the KPU already has a mechanism for changing chairmanship. This is in response to Hsyim Asy'ari who has been fired from the position of chairman of the KPU by the Election Organizing Honorary Council (DKPP).

Hadar said that the replacement of Hasyim Asy'ari as chairman of the KPU could be carried out through two mechanisms. The two mechanisms involve democratic election by the KPU commissioner in a plenary meeting as regulated in Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning Elections.

Currently, there are six KPU members, namely Betty Epsilon Idroos, Mochamad Afifuddin, Parsadaan Harahap, Yulianto Sudrajat, Idham Holik, and August Mellaz.

Hadar said that the first mechanism for KPU commissioners could wait for substitute members before choosing the definitive chairman of the KPU.

"If you are going to wait for a replacement member, the six existing members can choose the plt chairman. The new definitive chairman will only be elected after the complete KPU member becomes 7," Hadar said in his statement, Wednesday, July 3.

"The current six members can also directly elect a new chairman without waiting for the replacement members to enter," said the commissioner of the KPU periore 2012-2017.

Hasyim Asy'ari was permanently dismissed by the Election Organizers Honorary Council (DKPP) from his position as chairman of the KPU, Wednesday (3/7/2024). Hasyim was fired by the DKPP after being proven to have violated the code of ethics for committing immoral acts against a woman from the overseas election committee (PPLN).
