Mahfud MD: All Religions Have Their Own Terrorists Because Of Radical Understanding, But Generally Tolerant

SURABAYA - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD, said that every religion has followers of extreme radicals, even leading to acts of terror.

However, said Mahfud, in general in Indonesia, moderate understanding and differences do not develop into divisions.

"All religions have their own terrorists, because they are very radical in their understanding," said Mahfud MD after a gathering with the Regional Leadership Communication Forum, religious leaders, community leaders, and youth leaders, at the V / Brawijaya Military Regional Command Headquarters in Surabaya, Java. East, on Wednesday, March 17th.

Mahfud MD admitted that Indonesia is also hit by the problem of terrorism, but in general it can be overcome by being faced together by all elements of the nation. Mahfud said that the province of East Java is one example of a province that has succeeded in minimizing the development of radical extremism and terrorism.

"This shows, first, Islamic moderation, religious moderation is growing here (in East Java). There are indeed terrorist incidents, but they can be overcome. But in general, the people grow with tolerance," he said.

Moderation and tolerance are growing in East Java because of the religious culture that has long cultivated such an understanding. Mahfud then took the example of the Nahdlatul Ulama founded by KH Hasyim Asy'ari and Muhammadiyah which was founded by KH Ahmad Dahlan. According to him, the two scholars from the beginning developed religious moderation within their respective organizations.

Mahfud said, East Java is a place for religious moderation that was spearheaded by Kiai Hasyim Asyari, before that Muhammadiyah had developed in East Java.

"So that here is actually a conflict between religious believers because religious differences are very small," said the former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court (MK).
