JAKARTA - Deputy Chairperson of the KPK, Nurul Ghufron, reminded the importance of international commitment to eradicating high-level corruption. Different definitions should not be an obstacle to law enforcement when a suspect runs or secures his assets outside his home country.

This was conveyed by Ghufron in a limited meeting of the High-Level Meeting of Law Enforcement and Anti-Corruption Authoritys on Combating High-Level Corruption in Vilnius, Lithuania on Thursday, June 20.

"Because the perpetrators tend to have access to escape or hide their assets in foreign jurisdictions. To narrow the space for corruptors and recover state losses, differences in the definition of corruption between countries should not be an obstacle to law enforcement," Ghufron said in a statement quoted on Friday, June 21.

Meanwhile, the KPK Spokesperson Team Budi Prasetyo said this meeting was held behind closed doors. A total of 30 delegates from various countries and regions attended.

"(The meeting, ed) is to share views and experiences related to the high-level corruption, namely corruption carried out by high-ranking state officials and big businessmen," said Budi.

Furthermore, Budi said there were five joint statements from representatives of anti-corruption institutions of 25 countries and 5 international law enforcement organizations produced. Among other things, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation, increasing the capacity of institutions and personnel to eradicate corruption, strengthening the legal framework and increasing the independence of the justice system," he explained.

"High-level delegates also underlined the importance of whistleblower protection and collaboration with civil society and the private sector in efforts to eradicate corruption," Budi continued.

The closed system was held on the sidelines of the 21st International Anti Corruption Conference (IACC) event which took place on June 18-21 at LITEXPO. IACC is a global forum on anti-corruption which is held every two years since 1983 with participants and speakers from all elements of stakeholders in eradicating corruption including the government, civil society, the private sector and journalists.
