JAKARTA - Claudia Sheinbaum will become Mexico's first female president after winning the most votes in the country's 2024 general election, based on preliminary results released by Mexico's National General Election Institute (NEI).
Quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, June 4, the Mexican general election agency began the initial count process after more than 170 thousand polling stations were closed at 6 pm local time, Sunday, June 2, 2024.
Based on quick calculations, Sheinbaum won more than 58 percent of the vote, beating another female presidential candidate, Xochitl Galvez Ruiz who got only 26.6-28.6 percent of the vote, and Jorge Alvares Maynes who got 9.9--10.8 percent of the vote.
In addition, INE is also running an Initial Election Result Program (PREP) system that allows Mexicans to know firsthand the progress of the election results based on vote count reported by polling stations.
The vote count through the PREP system also showed Sheinbaum's victory which got more than 59 percent of the votes. The system also shows Galvez Ruiz only got 29 percent of the votes and Maynes got less than 11 percent.
Sheinbaum, who is from the ruling party Morena (National Regeneration Movement), previously continued to be in first place in a number of presidential candidate surveys ahead of the election.
With the initial election results showing his victory, Sheinbaum will be the successor to Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who also comes from Morena Party, on October 1, 2024.
Mexican president has served for six years and should not be re-elected afterward.

Meanwhile, Galvez Ruiz doubts the results of the initial count submitted by INE. In his statement on social media, he warned of potential election fraud.
"The sound is already there. Don't let them hide our voices," said Galvez Ruiz.
INE will only begin the final vote count by district on June 5 before declaring the president-elect officially later.
