JAKARTA - Secretary of Commission E of the DKI Jakarta DPRD, Jhonny Simanjuntak, asked the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government to increase the quota for admission of new students (PPDB) for the affirmation route.

PPDB affirmation channels are provided for children from underprivileged families, orphanage foster children, Transjakarta driver children, health workers who die in handling COVID-19, to people with disabilities.

In implementing PPDB, the DKI Provincial Government provides a quota for affirmation channels for the level of elementary, junior high, and public high schools as much as 25 percent.

The most quota is for zoning routes. Meanwhile, the rest is provided for the achievement path and the transfer of parental duties.

"From the Ministry of Education, it is said that at least 15 percent is affirmative. That's at least, it can be more than that. Shouldn't 15 percent be affirmative anymore? Why not make 50 percent?" said Jhonny in his statement, quoted on Wednesday, May 29.

Jhonny emphasized that in the current implementation of PPDB, it appears that more students from capable families are accommodated in public schools.

Meanwhile, there are still many underprivileged children who are forced to attend private schools.

"The affirmation quota is 50 percent, so that children who can't afford it will enter private school more than rich people who enter public schools are free," said Jhonny.

"Masak, rich people enter free high schools, poor people enter private schools, pay, rich people are subsidized by poor countries not subsidized by the state," he continued.

Jhonny said that currently the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has not been able to create free schools for children who receive education in private schools graded C and D. Thus, the addition of the PPDB quota for the affirmation route needs to be considered.

"It is fitting for the people of Jakarta, their students who cannot afford to have to go to school for free, not only in the country but also in private schools. I think the education department has often listened to what I have to say," he added.
