TANJUNG SELOR - The Blue Carbon Ecosystem is the concern of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenko Marves) and the Provincial Government (Pemprov) of North Kalimantan (Kaltara).

This is because this ecosystem contains many benefits such as improving the community's economy, improving water quality, and providing protection for coastal areas.

The Governor of Kaltara, Zainal A Paliwang, said that his party together with the Deputy for Environmental and Forestry Management of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs, Nani Hendiarti, UBT Chancellor Tarakan, Adri Patton and representatives of the Peat and Mangrove Restoration Agency (BRGM) together with partners or NGOs had agreed on this at the Preparation Workshop for the signing of the MoU between the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and the Kaltara Provincial Government in Denpasar Bali, recently.

"The MoU prepared by the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries aims to support the components of the 1.4 Preparation of Mangrove Blue Carbon Offset Readiness Mangrove for Coastal Resilience project," said Zainal A Paliwang, Monday 27 May.

Zainal called mangroves one of the habitats of vegetation in coastal waters that can capture and store large amounts of carbon.

"This means that the mangrove area in Kaltara will be one of the determinants of the amount of carbon that can be stored and absorbed to help mitigate climate change," said the governor.

In addition, the North Kalimantan Provincial Government has made efforts to rehabilitate mangroves by routinely planting mangrove trees in coastal areas in Kaltara.

"Starting in 2021, President Jokowi to the North Kalimantan Forkopimda routinely carry out mangrove planting on the coast of the waters of Kaltara," he explained.

"The proportion of benefits provided by mangroves is very large, so rehabilitation efforts need to be supported not only by the government, but also by all parties who pay attention to climate change, one of which is due to an increase in CO2," he continued.

The governor hopes that Kaltara will receive support so that it can contribute greatly to efforts to absorb carbon emissions through mangrove rehabilitation in Kaltara waters. With the wide potential for mangroves, the Kaltara Provincial Government has collaborated with partners to restore mangroves.

"I would like to thank the Coordinating Ministry for this cooperation plan. The blue carbon project is not only good for tackling climate change, but also for the economic welfare of the community," he said.
