JAKARTA - Director General of Law and International Agreement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amrih Jinangkung, emphasized that the status of Palestine as a sovereign country is unshakable and there is no doubt.

Although its territory continues to be undermined by Israel today, Palestine still meets the qualifications as a country based on the four conditions listed in the Montevideo Convention, namely a fixed population, fixed territory, a running government, and the ability to carry out relationships with other countries.

"From the legal and international aspects of the situation, recently it cannot eliminate the fulfillment of the qualifications of the state that Palestine already has," Amrih said as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, May 8.

In the discussion on the future of Palestine by the PANDEKHA Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University, he explained that in an effort to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and strengthen the status of Palestine as a sovereign state, all parties must strive to create a certain and permanent Palestinian territory, free from the occupation of other countries.

Amrih also highlighted the need to create a solid Palestinian government, as divisions between factions can reduce the effectiveness of government activities and hinder efforts to resolve conflicts with Israel.

However, he admitted that realizing these two things requires a long struggle and commitment from all parties because any internal and external dynamics that occurs has a profound impact on the development of conflict resolution.

Regarding Palestinian efforts to achieve the full membership status of the United Nations (UN), Amrih said this would be achieved if there were recommendations from the UN Security Council and supported by two-thirds of the UN General Assembly.

Although the United States veto in UN DK thwarted the Palestinian struggle for now, the Director General emphasized that this would not necessarily invalidate the status of Palestine as a country.

"The results of the UN vote (DK PBB) have no effect on the status of UN recognition of Palestine, because the United Nations still recognizes Palestine as an observator state (a observer country) whose country status remains recognized," said Amrih.
