JAKARTA - Violent explosions occurred four times at a military camp in Equatorial Guinea, leaving dozens of people dead and hundreds of others injured.

"The death toll from an accidental explosion at a military camp in Equatorial Guinea rose to 98 on Monday, state television said, as reported by Euronews.

A number of bodies and survivors were successfully pulled from the rubble after the four large explosions destroyed a military camp and its surroundings in Bata, Equatorial Guinea, with the number of injured reaching 615 people.

Three children aged 3 and 4 were pulled alive from the rubble of their home and taken to hospital, according to TVGE, the state television station under the Ministry of Information.

Location shows an image similar to a war zone, where rescue workers and civilians struggle to remove bodies from the smoky rubble.

A series of four large explosions occurred Sunday evening, hitting the Nkoa Ntoma camp, which houses special forces and police and their families, as well as nearby homes.

Equatorial Guinea President Teodoro Obiang Nguema blamed the accident on the burning of the stumps by local farmers and the negligence of oversight of the ammunition depot at the camp.

"The city of Bata has fallen victim to the negligence of the team tasked with guarding deposits of dynamite, explosives and ammunition. (It) caught fire due to the burning of embers caused by the burning of stumps in the fields by farmers, which eventually led to a series of explosions," Obiang said in his statement.

The Defense Ministry said the explosion caused by large-caliber ammunition caused a shockwave that literally destroyed many houses nearby.
