MPR Chair Reminds The Threat Of Technological Advancement For Civilizations

JAKARTA - Chairman of the MPR RI Bambang Soesatyo reminded that the advancement of information and communication technology has the potential to bring a 'dark side' to the progress of civilization. This was conveyed by a man who is familiarly called Bamsoet during the Socialization of the Four Pillars of the MPR RI in Jakarta, Saturday, May 4.

According to him, the younger generation is currently facing the challenges of developing information and communication technology.

"This surge in information and communication technology is supported by the presence of gadgets that are increasingly sophisticated with features that pamper their users," said Bamsoet in his statement received in Jakarta.

Bamsoet then gave an example in 2023 the number of active mobile phone users in Indonesia reached 354 million. In fact, the population is only 278 million.

"In line with the abundance of the number of gadgets circulating, the number of internet users has almost reached 80 percent of the total population of Indonesia," he said.

The former chairman of Commission III (Law, Human Rights and Security) of the Indonesian House of Representatives said that there are always challenges to realizing individuals with superior and competitive personality character, Pancasila spirit, and Indonesian heart.

In addition, said Bamsoet, the records of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) also state that youth and the younger generation are elements of society who are most vulnerable to exposure to radicalism.

This was also stated by a survey of the digital civility index conducted by Microsoft in 2020 which places Indonesia as the most 'disrespectful' country in Southeast Asia.

The factors that influence the poor digital impairment index include hoaxes and fraud (47 percent), hate speech (27 percent), and discrimination (13 percent).
