ROMA - Pope Francis will attend this year's summit of G7 country leaders to discuss the challenges posed by Artificial Intelligence (AI), Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said.

Pope Francis this year warned of the "bad" danger of AI and renewed calls for regulations around the world to take advantage of it for the common good.

Reporting from Reuters on Saturday, April 27, the G7 meeting was held in Puglia, southern Italy, on June 13-15 and attended by the United States, Germany, Britain, France, Italy, Canada, and Japan, as well as several special invited guests.

"This is the first time in the history of a Pope taking part in the work of the G7," Meloni said in a video message.

He said Pope Francis would attend a session dedicated to discussing AI.

"I believe the presence of His Majesty will make a decisive contribution in drafting the framework of ethical and cultural regulations for artificial intelligence," Meloni said.

Italy, which currently serves as the head of the G7 turnover, this week approved a draft law aimed at establishing basic rules for the use of AI, allocating investment in this sector and imposing sanctions on AI-related crimes.

"(This is) a technology that can generate great chances, but also carries enormous risks, and affects global balance," Meloni said on Friday, April 26, stressing that AI must be human-centered and controlled by humans.
