UN Says Racial Discrimination Rises In Great Britain

JAKARTA - Racial discrimination against black people is on the rise in the United Kingdom. In addition, most of them are still ignored because systemic racism still exists.

This was said by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). According to him, the committee (Human Rights) is concerned about reports showing that racial inequality and discriminatory practices against thesuicipants, Rome and Travelers (utenis minorities), people of African descent and other minority groups are still largely unresolved.

"It seems that it is increasing despite some positive steps taken by the UK," the OHCHR report quoted Antara as saying.

The organization also expressed concern about reports indicating there are still gaps, including discriminatory police treatment of ethnic minorities.

They also highlight discrimination in the criminal justice system, the large number of people of Afika descent and ethnic minorities occupying detention homes, as well as judicial bias, and the lack of participation of minority groups in politics and decision-making.

OHCHR also sees an increase in racial crimes, particularly on the basis of race, religion, disability, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and gender identity in Britain.

"Privates with a hate crime are still underreported due to a lack of trust in police institutions," the report said.

According to Statista's statistical portal, the United Kingdom has seen a spike in racial crimes in recent years, particularly in the UK and Wales, where police recorded 145,212 racial crime incidents in 2022-2023, or 130,000 more than the 2012-2013 period.
