Again, Nine Protesters Against Myanmar Military Coup Were Killed

JAKARTA - Myanmar police and military shot and killed nine people during a protest against a military coup on Wednesday, February 3 local time.

Two people were killed in clashes in the country's second-largest city, Mandalay, said an eye witness and media reports, and one person was killed when police opened fire in the main city of Yangon, an eye witness there said as reported by Reuters.

The Monywa Gazette reported that five people were killed in the city center in a police fire. One person was shot and killed in the center of Myingyan City, said student activist Moe Myint Hein.

"They shot us with live bullets. One person was killed, he was young, a teenage boy was shot in the head", Moe Myint Hein, who was injured in the leg, told Reuters by phone.

A spokesman for Myanmar's ruling Military Regime did not answer phone calls who are seeking comment.

The violence came a day after the foreign ministers of ASEAN countries from Southeast Asia urged the restoration of democracy and the release of Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi, President U Win Myint, and other prisoners. As well as urging an end to repressive actions against protesters.

At least 30 people have been killed since a military coup on February 1, which ended Myanmar's tentative move toward democratic rule, sparking national protests and international disillusionment.
