Police Ticket Dozens Of Youths With Reckless Convoys In Makassar Who Were Recorded By ETLE

The police took action against dozens of youths in Makassar City, South Sulawesi, who were caught on an electronic traffic control camera or Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE) carrying out a reckless convoy and without wearing a helmet.

Director Lalu Lintas Polda Sulsel Kombes I Made Agus Prasatya said dozens of youths who were caught on the ETLE camera had their identities detected and sent a ticket to their respective addresses.

"One of the goals of ETLE is to increase compliance with traffic regulations that are implemented by recording traffic violations electronically," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Monday, March 25.

Agus said the purpose of the electronic control of traffic was to increase compliance with motorists and reduce the number of accidents.

Accident data shows the connection between high traffic violations and fatal accidents.

The implementation of ETLE is a manifestation of the modernization of traffic because through ETLE things that are conventionally limited in nature cannot be implemented, it can actually be done with the surveillance camera.

"Some of the things that can be done with ETLE that are unlikely to be done conventionally is full 24-hour surveillance and can record violations, although in large numbers simultaneously and are valid," he said.

Agus gave an example of a motorcycle convoy carried out by a number of youths on Sunday (24/3) at 16:59 p.m. on Jalan AP Pettarani, right in front of the Makassar Post Office. All motorists in the convoy were recorded violating traffic rules, namely not wearing helmets and riding three people.

The youths used the guise of distributing takjil and violating traffic rules and controlling all roads.

According to Dirlantas, the act clearly endangered the participants of the convoy and the community, and disturbed other road users.

"To provide a deterrent effect, currently the vehicle used by the violators is secured at the Makassar Police Headquarters," he said.

There were 25 motorbikes that were secured and all of them have been dealt with with with ticketing and will be tried on April 19, 2024.

"This means that the vehicles of the violators can be given a week after Eid," added Agus.
