The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has instructed local governments (Pemda) affected by the flood to take quick steps in handling it.

"BNPB urges local governments to immediately take quick response steps," said Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center Abdul Muhari in a written statement, Friday, March 8, quoted by Antara.

Abdul said the directives and appeals were in response to the rise of floods and landslides as well as the potential for rain in areas that were still experiencing disasters.

The quick step that must be taken by the local government is to set up refugee tents to evacuate residents whose houses are significantly affected. Then clean the river flow if there is material that causes the water discharge to overflow.

In addition, BNPB also asks every stakeholder in the region to be alert at locations that have the potential for further disasters, and meet the needs of residents affected by natural disasters.

The BNPB Operations Control Center (Pusdalops) recorded that a number of areas in West Sumatra Province (West Sumatra) were flooded on Friday, March 8. The incident was caused by high-intensity rain that hit several areas since Thursday 7 March.

The affected areas include Padang City, West Pasaman Regency, Pesisir Selatan Regency, Mentawai Islands Regency, Padang Pariaman Regency, Agam Regency, Solok City and Pariaman City.

Separately, West Sumatra Governor Mahyeldi appealed to the public to remain vigilant about the impact of high rainfall which could cause floodwaters to rise again.

"The rain had subsided on Friday morning, but at around 09.30 WIB it flushed some areas, including Padang City. Residents must remain vigilant," said the Governor.
