The West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has set a disaster emergency response for the next week, after the flash flood that hit Sumbawa Regency on Friday.

BPBD officers together with flood victims began cleaning up mud on the road to residents' homes, Sunday, February 11.

"At least in this week of emergency response, refugees get food, meaning food and health services must be prepared here," said the Head of BPBD NTB, Ahmadi, Sunday afternoon.

BPBD also deployed heavy equipment and water pump machines to clean up materials and mud that were quite thick, on the road to the residents' areas.

Ahmadi said the flash flood that hit a sub-district in Sumbawa Regency was caused by hills surrounding residential areas that could not accommodate rainwater.

"If we look at yesterday's floods on February 9, 2024, the rain was quite heavy even though the duration was only two hours but the intensity was quite high. In addition, the topography in Sumbawa is hilly, causing the flood to be large, called flash floods," he said.

Ahmadi said, from the post-flood monitoring caused by the overflow of the Brang Ore River, there were several points with low embankment elevation conditions. Thus, flash floods hit residential areas on the left side of the Brang Bere River.

"Regarding the flow of this flood in the Brang Ore River, several sub-districts on the left and right, there are indeed about 10 embankments under the flood elevation," he explained.

BPBD NTB has distributed logistics, such as ready-to-eat meals and clean water to residents affected by the flash flood disaster.

"So the demands of the community today are food, this is the main thing, then ready-to-eat food, drinking water because almost all wells are dirty with mud," he concluded.
