PAMEKASAN - The Criminal Investigation Unit of the Pamekasan Resort Police, East Java, conducted a hand arrest operation against journalists who extorted a village head in the area.
In addition to arresting the suspect, the police also confiscated evidence worth Rp. 4 million from the extortion carried out by journalists from one of the online media.
"The person concerned we are doing this OTT with the initials VR and the suspect's action was carried out at a cafe in Pamekasan on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at around 11.30 WIB," said Pamekasan Police Chief AKBP Jazuli Dani Iriawan as reported by ANTARA, Thursday, February 1.
The arrest of this online media journalist began when the Head of Somalang Village, Pakong District, Pamekasan, named Muhammad complained to members of the Pamekasan Police about someone claiming to be a journalist asking for Rp4 million.
The perpetrator, who claimed to be a member of a local journalist association in Pamekasan Regency, asked the Somalang Village Head Muhlis for money because he found allegations of discrepancies in the work on village projects.
"If they are not given money, the journalist threatens to raise the news of the project in Somalang Village, the media where he works," said the Police Chief.
Due to the village head's complaint, the Pamekasan Police then dispatched plainclothes personnel to the designated location.
The officers then made arrests when the perpetrator was at the scene and received money according to the suspect's request.
To account for his actions, the police charged the suspect with Article 368 of the Criminal Code (KUHP) with a penalty of nine years in prison.
