JAKARTA - AsianaAirlines Inc., South Korea's second-largest airline, said Sunday that it plans to weigh passengers on international flights to calculate passenger weight standards.

Starting Monday, Asiana will weigh passengers on international flights departing from Gimpo International Airport in western Seoul until the end of this month to calculate passenger weight standards, the company said.

Passengers will be asked to stand on the scales in full clothes and laptop bags. Passengers are free to refuse to participate.

Standard weights are used to distribute aircraft weights and improve operational safety.

The data will also provide airlines with information on how much additional fuel the aircraft should carry, given that the fuel usually loads about one percent more than necessary.

In December, Asiana Airlines made heavy measurements of about 5,000 domestic flight passengers. Korean Air Lines Co. also weighed on their passengers in August last year.
