MAKASSAR - Vice Presidential Candidate Mahfud MD admitted that he wanted to return Law number 30 of 2002 concerning the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) or the old law before revision was carried out to restore the glory and dignity of the KPK.

"For the current KPK, my trust is a bit lacking, but in my opinion, the KPK is still needed. Because in the past the KPK had a heyday with the old law. If I can be honest, the law should be returned first, that's what matters," said Mahfud when delivering his ideas and vision at the Hasanuddin University campus in Makassar, South Sulawesi, reported by ANTARA, Saturday, January 13.

The professor of the Faculty of Law at the Islamic University of Indonesia (UII) Yogyakarta also responded to the question of Unhas lecturer Professor Armin Asryad who expressed concern over the existence of the KPK which began to fade after the KPK law was revised and ratified by the DPR RI.

"People ask me, how come you were there when the KPK Law was born that weakened the KPK. Well, the law was born before I became Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, so it was discussed since January, September it was passed, October I became a Minister, so this (detained) has been ratified," he said.

The former chairman of the Constitutional Court (MK) explained the reason the government did not issue a Regulation in Lieu of Law (Perppu). Perppu said Mahfud could not be issued because the DPR refused.

"Because, the Perppu was approved by the DPR during the trial. If the DPR rejects the Perppu, even though the KPK is ready to work with the Law and then cancel the Perppu, this could be chaotic between the exit of the law and the issuance of the Perppu, then all legal actions taken by the KPK must be released by all imprisoned people (corruptors)," he explained.

According to Mahfud, if he is elected with Ganjar Pranowo, he will restore the old rules previously implemented by the KPK so that public trust is returned.

"If I agree this is corrected. Our agenda is first, change the KPK Law, return it to the old one. With a selection process that doesn't need to involve the DPR too much. Just be objective, leave it to the community. There used to be a team from community leaders, the DPR is a formality. Now (DPR), lobby first so this, that, has been tied in the neck before it becomes," he explained.
