Mahfud MD Makes Sure President Jokowi Can't Be Impeached

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs as well as Vice Presidential Candidate number 2, Mahfud MD ensured that President Joko Widodo could not be impeached ahead of the 2024 General Election. This was in response to the insistence on the Petition of 100 People's Daulat Law Enforcement.

"The election has been less than 30 days, (the indictment) at the DPR level alone will not be completed to find a third (member) of the DPR who impeached, not to mention the trial (at the Constitutional Court)," Mahfud said in his statement, Friday, January 12.

Mahfud explained that there are five conditions to impeach the president as regulated in the 1945 Constitution. First, the president is involved in corruption, is involved in bribery, committing severe abuse, or serious crimes, for example killing,

Fourth, Mahfud continued, violating the country's ideology. Finally, violating appropriateness or violating ethics.

Reflecting on these conditions, Mahfud reminded that the president's impeachment is not easy to realize before the election.

The reason is, the proposal must first go to the legislative body and requires a very long process.

The DPR which accused it, charged, carried out an impact. The impact must be carried out by at least one-third of the members of the DPR, out of 575 members of the DPR. From a third (member of the DPR), two-thirds must attend the trial. Of the two-thirds present, two-thirds must agree to impeachment," said Mahfud.

Mahfud added that the proposal must also be continued in the trial process at the Constitutional Court (MK) if this requirement is achieved or the DPR approves the impeachment.

"If the DPR agrees, it will be sent to the Constitutional Court later. (Checked) whether the DPR's decision is true that the president has violated it, later the Constitutional Court will have a long trial. Even though this was the one who sued him asking for it to be impeached before the election," he said.
