BMKG: Beware Of Waves As High As Four Meters In The North Natuna Sea

NATUNA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) appealed to the public and fishermen, as well as ship operators to be aware of the potential for waves as high as four meters in the North Natuna Sea, Riau Islands (Kepri).

Head of the Ranai Class III Meteorological Station, Riau Islands Natuna Regency Ferimex Hutagalung, in a written statement received in Natuna, Sunday, said the condition was expected to occur on January 7-9, 2024.

According to him, waves with a height of four meters are in the high category that has the potential to cause fishing boat accidents, barges and ferries.

In addition, in the same period, waves with moderate categories or 1,25-2.5 meters also have the potential to occur in several waters.

These waters include the Natuna Sea, the South Waters of the Natuna Islands-Midai Waters, the West Waters of the Natuna Islands, the Waters of the Subi-Sesan Islands, the North Waters of the Natuna Islands.

"The weather conditions during this period have the potential to increase high waves in the North Natuna Sea Waters region," he said.

He said, Natuna Regency also has the potential to experience rain with moderate to heavy intensity accompanied by lightning and strong winds during that period.

Rain is expected to occur in the morning, afternoon, evening and early morning.

"The existence of a wind bend pattern (shearline) and atmospheric stability conditions in the weak Riau Islands region support the growth of rain clouds in Natuna Regency," he said.

Therefore, he appealed to the people of Bunguran Island, Tiga Island, Serasan Island, Subi Island, Midai Island and Laut Island to be careful in their activities and be aware of extreme weather, because it can trigger hydrometeorological disasters such as tornadoes, puddles, floods, and landslides.

"We urge fishermen and shipping ships to always be careful and vigilant when going to sea because the growth of rain clouds in the sea is still increasing and the potential for high waves, especially in the North Natuna Sea, northern Natuna Waters, and East Natuna Waters," he said.
