Ministry Of Health Finds 3 Cases Of Disabled Acute Layoffs Due To Polio Virus

JAKARTA - The Directorate General of Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) of the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) received reports of the discovery of three cases of acute wither paralyzed cases (Acie Flaccid Paralysis/AFP) caused by the type two Polio virus.

Two cases were found in Central Java and East Java in December 2023, while another case was found in East Java on January 4, 2024.

"In December 2023, two cases of acute depletion paralyzed cases were found caused by the Polio virus with a chronology of different cases. One case of polio immunization is incomplete, the other immunization status is complete but is malnourished," said Director General of P2P of the Ministry of Health Maxi Rein Rondonuwu as reported by ANTARA, Friday, January 5.

Maxi said the first case of acute paralysis was experienced by a 6-year-old girl, domiciled in Central Java, and with the initials NH. Based on the parents' confession, NH suffered an acute wilted paralysis on November 20, 2023, with a history of immunization of polio drops (OPV) only twice.

The second acute paralyzed case, he continued, was experienced by a boy aged 1 year and 11 months, domiciled in East Java, and with the initials MAF. MAF was paralyzed on November 22, 2023 with a complete immunization history but the results of the examination showed that he was malnourished.

"Based on the results of the examination of the National Polio Referral Laboratory for BBLK Surabaya and the results of sequencing from the Bio Farma Bandung Laboratory on December 20 and 22, 2023, NH and MAF showed positive for the type two Polio virus," he said.

Furthermore, the third acute paralyzed case was experienced by a boy aged 3 years and 1 month, domiciled in East Java, and with the initials MAM. MAM was paralyzed on December 6, 2023 with a history of immunization of polio drops 4 times and polio injections (IPV) 1 time based on parental recognition.

The results of the examination of the BBLK Surabaya National Polio Referral Laboratory and the results of the sequencing from the Bio Farma Bandung Laboratory on January 4, 2024 showed positive for the type two Polio virus.

Maxi explained that polio is one of the preventable diseases by immunization. Polio virus can be transmitted through water contaminated with foam containing the Polio virus.

"Some of the risk factors for the transmission of the Polio Virus are the low coverage of polio immunization, environmental hygiene conditions, and poor clean living behavior such as defecating (BAB) carelessly, either in rivers or in water sources that are also used in daily life," he said.

For this reason, the Ministry of Health urges the public to play an active role in tackling and cutting off transmission of the Polio virus, one of which is by completing polio immunization in children, to prevent the development of the virus in the digestive tract so as not to attack the nervous system of children which can cause paralysis.
