JAKARTA - One of two explosions that occurred in a crowded area in the city of Kerman, southeastern Iran, was a suicide bombing, state media said.

Citing information sources in the city, Iran's IRNA news agency reported an initial investigation showed the bombing was caused by an explosive device but after examining evidence, including CCTV footage, it was confirmed that the first explosion was a suicide attack.

The second explosion may be the same but the investigation continues, IRNA reports based on unnamed source statements, as reported by ANTARA, Friday, January 5.

The first suicide bomber was a man whose body was torn apart due to the explosion. Iranian authorities continue to try to reveal the identity of the perpetrator.

The two bombings took place 1.5 kilometers and 2.7 kilometers from the tomb of former head of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force (IRGC) Qassem Soleimani.

The reason why the perpetrators chose the location was because they were unlikely to pass through the inspection gate.

A total of 84 people were killed and 284 injured in a bomb attack that was detonated when thousands of people gathered to commemorate Soleimani's four-year death.

Soleimani was killed in a US drone strike outside Baghdad International Airport in January 2020.

Meanwhile, the Daesh terrorist group or ISIS, claimed responsibility for the attack.

The group said more than 300 people were killed in two suicide bombings in Iran.

They said the two bombers were Omer al-Mohed and Safiullah Mujahid who detonated the vest containing the explosives they were wearing, in the crowd of Iranians.

The attack on Kerman was the deadliest since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, when viewed from the death toll.
