This Is The Potential Danger Of Eruption In East Flores According To PVMBG

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) through the Center for Volcano Monitoring and Mitigation of the Land Movement of the Nusa Tenggara Region warned the public about the potential danger of volcanic eruptions in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

The warning is related to the potential danger of explosive eruptions with a material ejection distance of more than three kilometers after the status of the Lewotobi Laki volcano in East Flores from level II or Alert to level III or Alert.

"The stronger eruption activity can cause landslides in the fracture section which can cause hot clouds to appear with a sliding distance of up to four kilometers to the northwest, north, and south southeast," said Head of the Volcano Monitoring and Mitigation Center for the Land Movement of the Nusa Tenggara Region, Zakarias Ghele Raja, from Wulanggitang District, East Flores, as reported by ANTARA, Monday, January 1.

As previously reported by VOI, PVMBG has declared an increase in the status of the Lewotobi Male volcano to Alert starting January 1, 2024 at 04.00 WITA.

The increase in status refers to the results of visual and instrumental monitoring which show an increase in activity and seismicity in the mountain, and is aware of hot clouds from the direction of crater fractures.

Based on visual observations, PVMBG recorded a new eruption center originating from a fracture southeastern to east of the top of the mountain on January 1, 2024. In addition, there was an eruption with a height of 1,000 to 1,500 meters from the summit, the column of ash from the eruption was white, gray to black.

In addition to visual observations, instrumental observations also noted an increase in tremors with an amplitude of up to seven millimeters.

Due to the increase in status, Zakarias appealed to the people around the mountains and visitors or tourists not to carry out any activities within a four-kilometer radius of the epicenter of the Lewotobi Laki and Lewotobi Perempuan volcano eruptions.

He advised the public to remain calm and not be consumed by false information or hoax news related to the volcanic eruption.

"You have to stay away from the volcano, because if you suddenly erupt it will be difficult to avoid it," he reminded.
