Vice President (Vice President) Ma'ruf Amin mentioned the Company's Performance Ranking Assessment Program in Environmental Management (Proper) as a compass towards green economy practices.

"Proper should be a compass capable of guiding sustainable business practices by applying green economy principles, even encouraging achievements that exceed industry compliance with environmental regulations," said the Vice President when handing over the 2023 Proper Award in Jakarta, Wednesday, December 20, which was confiscated by Antara.

He said the world was facing an environmental crisis in the form of climate change, loss of biodiversity, and environmental pollution.

"This problem is a universal problem that needs to be solved together, one of which is through sustainable development," said the Vice President.

According to him, Proper needs to be seen as a platform for companies to take part in sustainable development, especially to prevent environmental damage and pollution due to industrial activities carried out.

Therefore, the Vice President asked the company's performance in environmental management to continue to be improved until it reached the best level of Proper criteria.

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (LHK) has completed a PROPER assessment of 3,694 participating companies. 79 of them are at the gold level, 196 at the green level, 2,131 at the blue level, 1,077 at the red level, and there are no companies at the black level.

"It needs to be a concern that the majority of participants this year are at the blue level. In the following year, I hope the percentage of companies will dominate in the green and gold categories," he said.

Likewise, he added, companies that are still at the black and red levels should immediately accelerate corporate governance as well as meet environmental standards set by the government.

The Vice President also reminded that environmental management efficiency needs to be accompanied by the spirit of community empowerment.

He said that this year's Proper has driven budget efficiency in environmental management to more than IDR 158 trillion or around 23 percent more efficiently than the previous year.

In terms of community empowerment, continued the Vice President, the funds launched by the company reached Rp1.56 trillion.

In addition, there are more than 20 thousand activities that answer sustainable development goals with a total fund of around IDR 57 trillion, up almost 24 percent since Proper was first launched in 2018.

"I ask that this budget be ensured to use properly for environmental management and improve people's welfare," he said.

Ma'ruf also appealed to multi-party collaboration and the active role of the business world to be increased to realize Indonesia's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 31.89 percent with independent capabilities and 43.20 percent with international support by 2030.

"Moreover, this country also has a commitment to support the target of achieving Clean Zero Emissions by 2060," said the Vice President.

"In particular, I advise business actors to increase their contribution and take concrete action in overcoming climate change and sustainable environmental management," he said.
