We Are Entering A Period Where Criminals Get Used To Using Firearms

JAKARTA - The phenomenon of criminals acting with firearms is increasingly happening. In fact, they do not hesitate to injure people with gunfire if their criminal operations are threatened.

One of the crimes that involved firearms was the robbery of the Cantik gold shop at the Pecah Kulit Pinangsia Market, Tamansari, West Jakarta. The perpetrator, who was caught on a CCTV camera wearing a helmet and face covering, fired firearms twice.

First, be directed to the gold shop and hit the lamp. Then, towards one of the witnesses and hit his leg.

About three to four kilograms of gold, the perpetrators managed to grab from the shop. Meanwhile, in the effort to reveal this, the police have taken legal steps, such as examining several witnesses and taking evidence in the form of a sleeve from the perpetrator's firearm.

Head of Public Relations of Polda Metro Jaya Kombes Yusri Yunus said, from the results of the interim examination, it was known the physical characteristics of the perpetrator who had slanted eyes and had an ethnic distinction. However, the investigation is still ongoing to catch the perpetrator.

With one example of this case, it is undeniable that the public's sense of concern is getting bigger over the various crimes that could have befallen them. "From the testimonies of witnesses, victims and CCTV footage, we can identify the perpetrators," he said.

The phenomenon of rampant use of firearms in a crime was responded to by Criminologist at the University of Indonesia (UI) Ferdinand Andi Lolo. According to him, there were two reasons why the perpetrators chose firearms to carry out the action.

First, by using firearms, the perpetrators can get a lot of results. Then, the second goal is to solve the crime quickly. Thus, there are minimal witnesses and it is difficult to reveal.

"The two elements are more likely to be obtained from firearms than other weapons," said Ferdinand, contacted by VOI, some time ago.

Another factor is the fear of the victim and the impact if the perpetrator uses a firearm. So, naturally, the people who become victims will choose not to fight back and comply with all requests from the perpetrators of the crime.

On the other hand, the matter of perpetrators of crimes who do not hesitate to use firearms to injure their victims, it is said, is done to reduce the risks that occur, for example, being caught, or others. "They do not hesitate to use it to reduce the risk of their crimes being stopped and increase their chances of success," said Ferdinand.

For this reason, law enforcement officials must promote the disclosure of illegal firearms manufacturing industries. This is because the criminals do not need to spend very much just to get these dangerous weapons.

"What law enforcers need to do is supervise and control homemade weapons, or organic weapons. Minimize the black market for weapons, and supervise the potential for making weapons on a home industry scale," concluded Ferdinand.
