Police Persecuting Prisoners In Balikpapan Become Suspects

JAKARTA - The National Police Headquarters confirmed that the six police officers suspected of assaulting Balikpapan Police prisoner, Herman (39) was dead, now the perpetrator named as suspects. They were also removed from office.

"So the concerned (6 police) suspects after being transferred to Yanma (Headquarters Service) were also removed from their positions", said Head of Public Relations of the Police, Inspector General Argo Yuwono to reporters, Tuesday, February 9.

Argo emphasized that one of the six suspects was the Head of Unit with the initials Iptu RH. But the other five suspects were not clearly informed about their identities.

"Members of the police who carried out the torture resulted in the death of the suspected weighted theft. We are wearing a criminal code and a code of ethics", he said, adding that the suspects were also handled by the East Kalimantan Police Professional and Security Division.

Argo has not been able to convey the chronology of the persecution. The six police officers are still being investigated intensively.

A prisoner named Herman died on Thursday, December 3, 2020. The day before, Herman was taken by 3 unknown people from his house in Bilangan Muara Rapak, North Balikpapan.

Herman was then taken to the Balikpapan Police to be examined in the case of theft of 2 cell phones. Visiting families are not allowed to meet.

As told by the family, Herman vomited and repeatedly defecated so that the officers were taken to Bhayangkara Hospital. However, Herman is helpless and dies.

When the body was returned, the family found several wounds on the deceased's body. However, it was only on February 5, 2021, that the family reported their case to The security profession of the East Kalimantan Regional Police.
