JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo ratified the draft National Strategy for Business and Human Rights into Presidential Regulation Number 60 of 2023 concerning the National Strategy for Business and Human Rights or StranasBHAM.

The Director General of Human Rights at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Dhana Putra, said that the ratification was a concrete step for the government to encourage human rights values in the business world. The ratification of Stranas BHAM is also proof of the government's concern in realizing a sustainable business climate.

"We believe that the ratification of the National Strategy for Business and Human Rights by the President shows that the implementation of human rights values is increasingly needed to create a sustainable business climate in the country," said Dhana as quoted by ANTARA, Monday, October 2.

He explained that the BHAMakanStranas focuses on three strategies, increasing understanding, capacity, and promotion of business and human rights, developing regulations, policies, and guidelines that support human rights protection and respect, as well as strengthening effective recovery mechanisms.

"In several dialogues held with business actors, we found that the implementation of human rights in the business world is actually in line with the spirit in the ESG (environmental, social, and governance), which ultimately provides a competitive advantage for companies to compete in the global market," he said.

Dhana explained that the discussion on the preparation of the BHAM Stranas has been going on since 2016. After being appointed as the National Local Point (NFP) of business and human rights in 2019, the Ministry of Law and Human Rights has intensified the discussion of the draft.

A number of ministries, institutions, academics, and associations of business actors who are members of the National Business and Human Rights Task Force (GTN BHAM) were involved in the discussion of the draft.

According to Dhana, Menkumham Yasonna H. Laoly also paid special attention during the discussion of the BHAM Stranas draft, including instructing his staff to take acceleration steps.

"One of them, the Minister of Law and Human Rights instructed us to continue to build dialogue and communication with business actors intensively so as not to cause misunderstandings," he added.

Dhana said the ratification of Stranas BHAM was something to be proud of for increasing the length of the list of countries in the world that implement business and human rights.

"Even though it is not a pioneer, we are the third country in Southeast Asia that already has regulations related to business and human rights," said the Director General of Human Rights.
