Floods At Karet Bivak Public Cemetery With 30 Centimeters Of Water

JAKARTA - The Karet Bivak Public Cemetery (TPU), Central Jakarta, was inundated by water due to heavy rains that occurred in Jakarta since Sunday, February 7.

"The flood occurred in blocks 15.16 and 17, as high as 30 centimeters", said Head of the Central Jakarta City Parks and Forests Sub-dept. Mila Ananda in Jakarta, as reported by Antara, Sunday afternoon.

Her party deployed 7 suction tanks, assisted by officials from the Central Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service (Gulkarmat).

Furthermore, the water is discharged into the river behind the gravesite. The process to extract the water from the public cemetery is still ongoing

Mila explained that in terms of the contours of the land, the positions of the tomb blocks 15.16 and 17 are in the form of a basin so that they are prone to inundation. While the position of the Karet Bivak cemetery is below the surface of the water channel on the road.

"With this position, the Karet Bivak cemetery is easily flooded because the tomb is lower than the road", she said.

However, the obstacle was that the puddle could not be dumped into the canal on the road, but into the river behind the location, whereas if it rained heavily, the river would overflow and hit the residential area which was also behind the cemetery location.

Therefore, Mila hopes to immediately coordinate with the Central Jakarta Sub-Department of Water Resources (SDA) to optimize the reservoirs built around the cemetery.

"I hope there will be permanent handling. There is a reservoir behind it, maybe it needs to be deepened, later I will coordinate with the Department of Water Resources or add a pump. So, it can be used when the high water can be sucked into the river", said Mila.
