This Is What Tesla Wants To Do In Indonesia: Work On A Giant Power Bank With A Capacity Of Up To 100 MW

JAKARTA - Deputy for Investment and Mining Coordination of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Marinves) Septian Hario Seto revealed that Tesla Inc's investment plan is in the field of Energy Storage System (ESS) or a large energy storage system.

"We have one more project with Tesla in the ESS sector. The project is similar to a battery or power bank with a large capacity, tens of MegaWatts (MW), even up to 100 MW", he said in a virtual press conference, quoted from Antara, Friday, February 5.

According to Seto, ESS will replace plants whose electricity demand at one time exceeds the average usage. This way, instead of building a new power plant, the "battery" can be charged when demand is low.

Tesla, continued Seto, had built the system in Australia and combined it with New and Renewable Energy (EBT).

"This is being studied internally, but they (Tesla) do exemplify their success in Australia", said Seto.

Seto said Tesla was eager to cooperate with Indonesia even though the demand for the system was quite high from various countries. This is because Indonesia's condition, which is in the form of an archipelago with abundant renewable energy potential is the main consideration for this cooperation.

"So, from their point of view, there are not many ESSs, but they really want to cooperate with Indonesia because they see Indonesia as an archipelago and has the potential for renewable energy, they can combine their technology and give maximum benefits", said Seto. Previously, the team leader for the Acceleration of Electric Vehicle Battery Project Agus Tjahajana expressed Tesla's interest in joining ESS.

"Regarding Tesla, we are in the negotiation stage. We are looking for and want to know about Tesla's interests. Tesla is a bit latecomer. We have advanced 5-6 months ahead, Tesla has only recently entered, so we are currently learning where they want to go. One of the things we got from the conversation yesterday was that Tesla wanted to enter the ESS (Energy Storage System)", said Agus.
