Dr. Habib Muhammad Luthfi bin Ali bin Yahya, or often called Habib Luthfi bin Yahya, is an ulama who was born in Pekalongan, Central Java, on November 10, 1946. The title Habib embedded in his name was obtained because he was a sharifah or descendant of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. His father's name is al-Habib 'Ali al-Ghalib who also holds the title of habib.

Habib Lutfi married Syarifah Salma bint Hasyim and was blessed with five children namely Syarif Muhammad Bahauddin, Syarifah Zaenab, Syarifah Fatimah, Syarifah Ummi Hanik, and Syarif Husain.

Habib Lutfi's father, Habib Hafidz Ali al-Ghalib, also holds the status of a major da'i as well as a considerable figure. This condition made his father emphasize Habib Lutfi's education to religious education, one of which was the Roudlotul Mubtadiin Balekambang Islamic Boarding School, Jepara.

Besides that, Habib Lutfi has also studied at other Islamic boarding schools such as in Central Java, in Cirebon, and in Indramayu. He has also been educated in Mecca, Medina, and several other countries. During his education, Habib Luthfi learned a lot about shari'ah, tharīqah, and tasawuf from the great ulamas, Waliyullah, and major Islamic scholars.

As an ulama as well as a da'i, Habib Luthfi often held ta'lim in Pekalongan. This activity became a form of Islamic da'wah in the surrounding Pekalongan area.

Habib Lutfi, who is a Nahdlatul Ulama figure, also served as Chairman of the Central Java MUI (2005-2010). His name is also included in the Presidential Advisory Council (Wantimpres) with a term of 2019-2024. His inauguration was held at the State Palace, Central Jakarta.

Not only in the country, Habib Luthfi is also respected and taken into account on the international stage. The reason is that he has been named one of the most influential Muslim figures in the world because his name is on the list of 500 influential Muslims in the world version of the Royal Jordanian Islamic Strategic Center. In the list published in October 2018, Habib Luthfi is in 37th place.

Then in 2019, he was appointed Chairman of the International Sufi Forum. The coronation was carried out by acclamation at the International Sufi Ulama Conference which was then being held in Pekalongan, Central Java.
