JAKARTA - The fire continues to bring disaster to threaten a number of northern suburbs of the Athens capital.
The fire that broke out Tuesday afternoon in the city of Fyli about 25 km from downtown Athens is still ongoing, out of control and extends to various directions, triggering evacuations in many settlements in the region.
Reports from the ERT television station, the fire approached Mount Parnitha, which is the radar base of the Greek Air Force. In the city of Aspropyrgos, which is 16 km northwest of Athens and the center of the industrial area, fires destroyed or damaged a number of factories.
The fire also forced residents in three residential areas to be evacuated, and delayed rail travel in some parts.
In the port city of Alexandroupoli, reported by Anadolu via Antara, the fire had entered its fourth day.
Dozens of settlements and hospitals issued evacuation orders. Various steps have been taken to evacuate independently in the city if required.
Meanwhile, Spokesperson for the National Fire Service Yiannis Artopios revealed that 93 fires occurred within 24 hours, but most of them could be handled early.
He added that there would be more assistance from the European Union within the framework of the Civil Protection Mechanism that would soon arrive in the country.
"This includes fire engines, fire engines, and firefighters," added Yianis.
In another development, the Meteorological Division of the Athens National Observatory announced that 161,874 hectares of forest areas throughout the country were destroyed by fire, from August 19 to 21.
