JAKARTA - The Head of the Traffic Corps (Kakorlantas) of the National Police, Inspector General of Police Firman Shantyabudi, said that Indonesia currently has 433 static cameras for law enforcement of electronic traffic (ETLE) and hundreds of other cameras for similar law enforcement.

"That to this day, the number of ETLE cameras is 433 for static ones, five for weight in motion or for mobile weighing, then 806 mobile handles, and 65 mobile onboards," said Firman in a joint hearing with Commission III of the DPR at the Senayan Parliament Complex, Jakarta, Wednesday, July 5, confiscated by Antara.

Firman said Indonesia still needs more ETLE cameras, including 3,465 static cameras and 1,472 weight in motion cameras.

"While what we need is still quite far, sir," he added.

Furthermore, Korlantas Polri also still needs to have 39,691 mobile handling cameras, 1,261 on-board mobile cameras, and 737 portable types of cameras for ETLE.

Firman added that his party also continues to improve the ability of ETLE which functions as a law enforcement system in information technology-based traffic, for example in order to recognize vehicle number plates.

"Up to the number of types of violations committed by the community while on the highway," he said.

Furthermore, Firman said that the fulfillment of ETLE, which is the National Police Chief's program, is in the middle of the running budget. He added that his party held tours with regional leaders in various regions.

"We are holding a tour to fathers and mothers of regional leaders in the region, reminding the potential for increasing motor vehicle taxes in their respective regions, because it turns out that this potential is up to trillions," he said.

He also hopes that there will be budget support, such as grants, sent to Korlantas and to the regional police for additional ETLE camera provision.

"Encourage Dirlantas and Kasatlantas to also move closer to the DPRD I and II respectively. With the hope that if the budget submitted to Korlantas or to the Regional Police is not sufficient, we hope that there will be grants and so on to increase budget shortages or the nature of adding goods," said Firman.

Meanwhile, Member of Commission III of the DPR Supriansa supports the plan to add an ETLE camera to help maximize the performance of the Korlantas Polri.

"I agree if the existing ticket results are then handed back to the traffic. How much is there, PNBP's revenue (non-tax state revenue) is then used to buy the camera. So, it's no longer a hassle for our traffic (police) to heat up, it's raining," said Supriansa.
