Chairman Of The BKSAP DPR RI Fadli Zon And UN Special Envoys Discuss Parliamentary Diplomacy Strategy In Overcoming The Myanmar Crisis

JAKARTA - Chairman of the House of Representatives' Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP), Dr. Fadli Zon from the Gerindra faction, held a meeting with the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights on Myanmar, Thomas Andrews, at the Parliament Building Complex, Senayan Jakarta. The meeting discussed the latest developments surrounding the situation in Myanmar after the coup carried out by the Military Junta in 2021.

During the meeting, Fadli Zon explained the consistency of the DPR RI for four consecutive years in carrying out parliamentary diplomacy through BKSAP, especially regarding the issue of the Rohingya humanitarian crisis since 2017. He also conveyed changes to the parliamentary strategy of the DPR RI through the ASEAN Regional Parliament Organization (AIPA) in response to the coup in Myanmar.

The success of the DPR RI's parliamentary diplomatic struggle in garnering support from the parliament of ASEAN countries was outlined in a joint resolution at the 43rd AIPA General Assembly at Phnom Penh, Cambodia, with the title "Parliamentary Diplomacy for the Implementation of 5 Consensus Points". Fadli Zon also revealed BKSAP's plan to encourage the Draft Resolution on Myanmar at the AIPA General Assembly in Jakarta this year, in response to the development of the current situation in Myanmar.

Fadli Zon emphasized the importance of parliamentary response to challenges in the ASEAN region and support for the ASEAN organization to be more relevant. He also revealed his moral visit as Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives to the Rohingya refugee camp in Cox Bazaar, Bangladesh, as a form of support for the Indonesian people to Rohingya refugees.

Thomas Andrews appreciated the steps taken by BKSAP through parliamentary diplomacy in AIPA. He acknowledged the strategic role of parliament in finding solutions to the crisis in Myanmar and accepted BKSAP's proposal to lobby OIC member countries to provide assistance through UN agencies to communities affected by the crisis in Myanmar.

Apart from Fadli Zon, the Deputy Chairperson of the BKSAP from the PKS faction, Sukamta, and members of the Indonesian House of Representatives from various factions such as Mercy Barends (PDI-P Faction), Puteri Komarudin, Ravindra Hartanto (Golkar Faction), and Jazuli Juwaini (PKS Faction).
