JAKARTA - The case of climbers stranded in the mountains of Japan touched a record high of more than 3,500 cases in 2022 when COVID-19 restrictions were relaxed and climbing routes reopened, according to police data released.
Based on data from the Japanese National Police, there was an increase of 431 cases compared to the previous year, bringing the total to 3,015 cases in 2022.
That figure is the highest since 1961, the Kyodo news agency reported as quoted by ANTARA from Anadolu, Thursday, June 15.
Tokyo metropolitan areas, including the famous climbing location of Mount Takao, received more reports of incidents of people stranded on the mountain.
Of those stranded, 327 people were killed or missing -- or 44 more cases than the previous year -- with about 70 percent of them aged 60 years and over.
