Head Of BMKG Re-elected As WMO Executive Council

JAKARTA - Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Dwikorita Karnawati was re-elected as Executive Council World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for the period 2023-2027.

"For the next four years, Indonesia is again trusted to be the Executive Council WMO. This is not an easy task, because Indonesia must be an example of good practice and how to manage strategic issues in the region," said Dwikorita as quoted by ANTARA, Monday, June 5.

Dwikorita as Indonesia's Permanent Representative for WMO became the Executive Council along with Tonga, Australia, and Singapore in the election held at the Nineth World Meteorological Congress (Cg-19) meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, Thursday (1/6) 2023.

He said that with Indonesia's re-electing as the WMO Executive Council, Indonesia will continue to struggle in gender mainstreaming, developing the capacity of developing countries, and strengthening the WMO organization and its members in strengthening the early warning of multi hydro-meteorological and hydro-geological disasters in order to improve the safety and welfare of the people in Indonesia and around the world.

"This position is also expected to further strengthen Indonesia's leadership and trust in the eyes of the international community to build a shared commitment in reducing global disaster risk," he said.

Previously, Dwikorita Karnawati was nominated by Indonesia as President of WMO for the period 2023-2027, but in the selection process at the Dwikorita Nineth World Meteorological Congress (Cg-19), Dwikorita has not been successfully elected.

Meanwhile, being elected as Secretary General of WMO is Prof. Celeste Saulo from Argentina, WMO President Abdulla Ahmed Al Mandous from the United Arab Emirates, as well as Vice President I WMO, Dauda Konate from Ivory Coast, Vice President II WMO, Eoin Moran from Ireland, and Vice President III WMO, Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra from India.

In addition, Congress has also selected the new WMO Executive Members for the 2023-2027 period for each WMO Area.

The selected countries are Ivory Coast, Ethiopian, South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Eswatini, Egypt, Cameroon, and Burkina Faso, United Arab Emirates, India, Vietnam, RRT, Japan, and South Korea (RA II: Asia), Uruguay, Brazil, Guyana, Peru.

Furthermore, Jamaica, Canada, United States, British Caribbean Territory, Curacao and Sint Marteen, Tonga, Australia, Indonesia, Singapore, Romania, Ireland, England, Germany, Switzerland, France, Norway, Italy, Turkey.
