The Aceh Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) deployed a team to monitor the condition of Sumatran elephant calf (Elephas maximus sumatranus) which was previously rescued after being caught in a snare in the Krueng Sabee area, Aceh Jaya Regency.

Head of the Aceh BKSDA Gunawan Alza said the monitoring was to ensure the health condition of the wild elephant calf remained in good condition.

"The wild elephant calf was treated because it was caught in a snare. After being treated, the elephant calf returned to the forest area. The BKSDA team will continue to monitor the health condition of the elephant calf," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Friday, May 19.

Previously, the Aceh BKSDA received information that an elephant calf was caught in a snare in another use area (APL) of Panggong Village, Krueng Sabee District, Aceh Jaya Regency, on Wednesday (17/5).

Based on information, the BKSDA team together with the police, personnel from the Forest Management Unit, and the community looked for the elephant calf. In the search, the elephant calf was finally found.

From the observations of the BKSDA medical team, the elephant calf was male, aged three to three years and six months weighing up to 658 kilograms.

"The condition of the elephant calf is in good health because it is near the river channel with sufficient feed. When found, the snares stick to the right front leg," said Gunawan Alza.

The medical team had to drug the elephant calf to remove the snares from the identified rope for deer. The medical team also provided antibiotics and vitamins.

"After being treated for the leg that was caught in the snare, the elephant calf was aware of the anesthetic. After that, the elephant calf slowly headed for the forest," he said.
