KPP Destroys 1,000 Koi Fish From Japan Infected With Virus

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) destroyed more than 1,000 Japanese koi fish infected with the Carpedema virus disease (CEVD) or commonly called the koi sleepy disease (KSD).

"This virus can cause high disease and death rates," said Head of the Jakarta I Center for Fish Quarantine, Quality Control and Safety of Fishery Products (BKIPM KKP), Heri Yuwono, quoted by ANTARA, Friday, May 19.

Heri revealed that fish infected with the CEVD virus show hemorrhagic swelling in the tissue below or hanging just below the surface of the water, so that infected fish change sluggishly and are not responsive.

"This virus can easily spread to other fish that are used or in sports with infected fish," he continued.

On this occasion, BKIPM also destroyed 83.3 kg of Thai fish or Paralichthys olvaceus from Japan. The fish were infected with Viral Haemorhagic Septicemia Virus (VHSV) as much as 83.3 kg, this disease is included in the quarantine fish disease class I, this virus is also able to infect sea and freshwater fish, and can cause death with a death rate of up to 90 percent.

This, he continued, is very dangerous for the survival of freshwater and sea fish cultivation in Indonesia, such as cydat cultivation,ferroism, betutu, and kerapu fish.

Previously, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono issued Ministerial Decree (Kepmen) Number 17 of 2021, which is part of the prevention and control of the spread of the growing quarantine fish disease.
