Jokowi's Firm Warning Will Remove Ministers Who Don't Focus On Work Because Of Nyaleg

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo reminded ministers and deputy ministers who do not focus on work because they are candidates for legislative members (caleg) or "nyalleg" in the 2024 election can be replaced.

"I always evaluate, if it disturbs you, the work is indeed disturbed, so change it, just like that," said President Jokowi as quoted by ANTARA, Sunday, May 15.

The General Elections Commission has opened registration for candidates for members of the 2024 House of Representatives (DPR) from 1-14 May 2023.

"What we have to know is that the rules are allowed. The important thing is from me not to interfere with daily tasks," said the President.

Several ministers and deputy ministers in the Indonesia Maju cabinet volunteered for members of the legislature (caleg) of the DPR RI in the 2024 General Election.

A number of names known to have come forward were Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan who ran in the Electoral Area (Dapil) of Central Java I including Semarang Regency, Kendal Regency, Salatiga City and Semarang City.

Furthermore, the Minister of Manpower Ida Fauziyah will relax through the National Awakening Party (PKB) in the Jakarta II electoral district which includes South Jakarta, Central Jakarta and abroad.

Next, there is the Minister of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions and Transmigration Abdul Halim Iskandar who will also become a legislative candidate in 2024 through PKB.

PDIP also registered the name of the Minister of Law and Human Rights (Menkumham) Yasonna Laoly as a candidate for 2024. Meanwhile, from the Nasdem party, Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo and Minister of Communication and Information Johnny G Plate emerged.

Furthermore, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Angela Tanoesoedibjo will leave through the Perindo Party in the East Java I electoral district which includes Surabaya and Sidoarjo.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Manpower Afriansyah Ferry Noor will run through the Crescent Star Party (PBB) in the West Java electoral district V. From PPP, the name Deputy Minister of Religion Zainut Tahuid Sa'adi appeared as a legislative candidate.

Based on Article 240 paragraph (1) of Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning General Elections, ministers running for legislative members do not need to resign from office.

The regulation only requires some public officials to resign when they want to leave. These positions are the heads and deputy regional heads, ASN, members of the TNI-Polri, directors, commissioners, as well as supervisory boards and employees at BUMN/BUMD.
