JAKARTA - Taiwan remains calm in dealing with China which deliberately increases tensions, President Tsai Ing-wen said at an event while transiting New York, United States, on his way to the Central American region.

Present at an event hosted by the Hudson Institute think tank, President Tsai said errors over rising tensions were in China's hands, according to a quote from his comments reported by Taiwan's Central News Agency.

"China is deliberately increasing tensions, but Taiwan is always responding carefully and calmly, so the world can see that Taiwan is the party responsible for cross-south relations," he said.

"The Taiwanese people hope for peace, but history tells us the best way to avoid war is to make ourselves stronger," President Tsai said at the event, where he received the leadership award.

"Unstable Taiwanese tools will bring serious economic and security risks to the world, and it is important for all countries to maintain peace and stability in the region," added President Tsai.

It is known, Taiwan's de facto embassies in the US said all activities of President Tsai Ing-wen in New York were closed to the media and the public.

President Tsai arrived in New York on Wednesday, with him planning to stop in the US again when he was about to return to Taiwan, Los Angeles next week to be precise, where he is expected to meet with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

This is the seventh time President Tsai has transited in the United States since he took office in 2016,

Indeed, President Tsai is on his way to Guatemala and Chile, two of several countries that have recognized Taiwan diplomatically. Transit in the US is currently the seventh time for President Tsai since taking office in 2016.

The visit comes at a time when US relations with China are at the worst level seen by some analysts, since Washington normalized relations with Beijing in 1979 and transferred diplomatic recognition from Taipei.

Beijing says Taiwan is part of "one China" and, as a Chinese province, has no right to have relations between countries. Taiwan denies this.
