JAKARTA - The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (LHK) said that people are increasingly concerned about waste problems that make waste management activities better in Indonesia.

The Director General of Waste Management, Waste, and B3 of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Rosa Vivien Ratnawati, admitted that currently there are more and more waste management practices driven by the community and industry players in various regions.

"I am optimistic that if we work together, the waste can be resolved," said Rosa when interviewed on the sidelines of the commemoration of the 2023 National Waste Care Day (HPSN) at the Manggala Wanabakti Building, Jakarta, Tuesday, February 21, as reported by Antara.

The National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry noted that the composition of waste based on types is dominated by food waste as much as 41.9 percent, plant waste (layows, branches, and leaves) 12 percent, paper waste or cardboard 10.7 percent, plastic waste 18.7 percent, and other waste 6.9 percent.

Meanwhile, the composition of waste based on waste sources is still dominated by households with a figure of 37.6 percent, traditional markets 16.6 percent, and commercial centers reaching 22.1 percent.

At HPSN 2023, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry held a Clean Country Explore program. The activity received support from thousands of cyclists who rode the pedal across the northern and southern routes of Java Island for approximately 1,100 kilometers with starting points in Bali, then ending in Jakarta.

They carry out waste care campaigns to various areas that are visited, as well as recording waste management activities carried out by the community, industry players, and the government to inspire the growth of waste management facilities in other areas.

In Surabaya, East Java, the State Clean Explore team has seen the practice of processing waste used into electricity. Meanwhile, in Cilacap, Central Java, they photographed the construction of a refuse derivative fuel (RDF) with a capacity of 200 tons per day to become a waste briquette and replace coal at a cement factory.

The State Clean Explore Team also visited the first Indonesian waste bank located in Bantul, Yogyakarta. The waste bank, named Gemah Ripah, is not only implementing a circular economy that is the welfare of the community, but also an inspiration for the formation of various waste banks throughout Indonesia.

Vivien said that HPSN 2023 is not only focused on integrated waste management, but also makes a greater contribution to the environment and global control ecosystem, including controlling climate change through reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Based on the latest document by Enhanced National Determined Contribution (ENDC), Indonesia targets a 31.89 percent reduction in emissions with its own efforts, which previously was only 29 percent. Then, the decline in emissions with international support was 43.20 percent from 41 percent previously.

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry has set the latest target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the waste and waste sector by almost four times the increase from before, which is 40 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2030.

Through HPSN 2023, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry ensures that the acceleration of waste management so that the value chain of waste management can improve people's welfare.

Not only that, but HPSN 2023 also ensures acceleration of waste management. So that the value chain of waste management can improve community welfare efforts. This mission is in line with the theme of HPSN 2023, namely Traffic of Waste Management for Public Welfare.

The momentum of HPSN which takes the theme 'Tuntas Kelola Sampah untuk Kesejahteraan Masyarakat', kita mau menyelesaikan persoalan sampah, tapi tidak hanya menyelesaikan menjadi Indonesia Bersih, tapi kita juga mau memajukan kesejahteraan rakyat," pungkas Vivien.
