Jokowi Requests Firm Law Enforcement of Insurance-Investment Products Criminal Cases

JAKARTA - The Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law and Security (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD said President Joko Widodo asked for strict law enforcement against unscrupulous financial industry actors who commit criminal acts of fraud or embezzlement of funds through insurance or investment products.

"The president asked that it (law enforcement) continue to be carried out strictly and we must show to the public that we are truly eradicating it", said Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD at the State Palace complex, Jakarta, reported by ANTARA, Monday, February 6.

Mahfud said law enforcement officials did not need to wait for new directives from the President. Law enforcement must be carried out against unscrupulous perpetrators of embezzlement of funds in the financial industry so that public trust is restored.

"No need to wait for new directives from the President. Law enforcement is as strict as possible against Wanaartha, Indosurya, and others", said Mahfud.

However, he emphasized that law enforcement requires a process and cannot be done quickly without observing procedures.

Mahfud explained that law enforcement officials needed time to gather evidence and examine the parties involved to make a case clear.

"If someone wants to commit a crime, it will take a while. You are cheating. It's easy to write IDR 150 billion into IDR 15 trillion. It will take one minute. But to solve it like that, you need to be summoned first, who are the witnesses, and where are the documents. That's also to understand why enforcement of the law is a bit slow", said Mahfud.

President Joko Widodo Previously asked the Financial Services Authority (OJK) to intensify supervision of insurance companies, online loans (Pinjol) and investments because in recent times many people have complained of suffering losses.

"Don't let the events that have happened, Asabri, Jiwasraya (loss) IDR 17 trillion, (loss) IDR 23 trillion. There is another Indosurya, there is another Wahanaarta until I memorized it because I read it", he said.

The President asked OJK to monitor in detail the performance of insurance companies.

Jokowi recounted his experience of meeting victims of embezzlement of insurance company funds who cried and asked for their money back.

"It has to be micro, followed one by one because the people who cry are the people. The people only ask for one, the money is returned because when I went to Tanah Abang there were people who cried about it. Surabaya is also crying. Be careful", said President Jokowi.
